Basic Knowledge of CNC Machining of PTFE
Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) resin, commonly known as the ""Plastic King,"" is widely used in various industries due to its unique properties. It possesses high-temperature resistance, non-oxidizing and non-dissolving characteristics, exceptional chemical stability, and excellent dielectric properties, making it an indispensable material in industries primarily focused on chemistry and mechanics. PTFE resin is typically in the form of powder or dispersion, with a high molecular weight (8.88×106 to 3.17×107) and high crystallinity (92% to 98%). It has a melting point of 327°C and contains strong F-C bonds in its molecular structure.
Items | Features | Descriptions |
Properties | Chemical Resistance | It is inert to most commonly used chemicals, except for reactions with molten sodium metal, fluorine, strong fluorinating agents, and sodium hydroxide above 300°C. |
Heat Resistance | It does not undergo thermal aging below 260°C.
Electrical Properties | It has excellent electrical insulation properties, high arc resistance, a volume resistivity greater than 1×1016Ω·m, and is not affected by temperature variations.
Lubricity | It has a low friction coefficient within a wide temperature range.
Radiation Resistance | It retains 50% of its original tensile strength even at maximum irradiation doses in a vacuum.
Low Permeability | It exhibits low permeability to most gases and liquids, except for fluorocarbon compounds with similar compositions.
Weather Resistance | It is unaffected by climatic conditions and can withstand exposure for over 10 years.
Non-Flammability | It has an oxygen index exceeding 90.
Non-Adhesive | Virtually all adhesive substances do not stick to their surface.
High And Low-Temperature Resistance | It can be used within a temperature range of -250°C to 250°C. Due to its exceptional properties, PTFE is often referred to as the "Plastic King" and finds widespread applications in defense, aerospace, petrochemical, electronics, mechanical, and various other industries.
Characteristics | Low Cutting Forces, Poor Thermal Conductivity, And Heat Resistance | During CNC machining of PTFE material, the cutting forces are approximately six to seven times smaller than those for metals. However, due to its low thermal conductivity and lower heat resistance compared to metals, the cutting speed needs to be reduced to prevent plastic softening and tool sticking. |
Non-Uniform Structure And Strength | Plastics consist of multiple components and their molecular structures exhibit various patterns, resulting in non-uniformity that hampers machining. Therefore, sharper and more wear-resistant cutting edges are required for cutting tools.
C. Severe Tool Wear And Susceptibility To Brittle Cracking | PTFE materials often contain various fillers and additives, such as glass fibers, which make them challenging to machine. Tools wear quickly, and after tool blunting, cracking, and edge chipping can occur under high extrusion forces.
High Thermal Expansion Coefficient | The thermal expansion coefficient of plastics is three to four times higher than that of metals, affecting dimensional stability and posing challenges in cutting operations.
Difficulty In Chip Formation | During turning and drilling operations, the chips formed from PTFE tend to be stringy, clinging to the tool and getting compressed together, which adversely affects the machining quality. |
